  • Spelman College Receives Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Grant to Establish New Curatorial Studies Program

    ATLANTA (Feb. 9, 2015) -- Spelman College has been awarded a $250,000 grant by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to pilot a Curatorial Studies Program. The Program is a two-year collaboration between Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and the Department of Art and Art History. The initiative has a two-fold mission: to prepare the next generation of students of African descent for curatorial professions; and serve as a pipeline to diversify the field.

  • Spelman College Museum of Fine Art Presents New Exhibition 'Maren Hassinger . . . Dreaming'

    ATLANTA (Feb. 6, 2015) – In 2013, New York Times art critic Holland Cotter described Maren Hassinger as “another artist awaiting serious study.” The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art agrees and will present "Maren Hassinger . . . Dreaming," from Feb. 12 to May 16, 2015. Throughout her career, Hassinger has explored nature’s integral, yet fragile relationship with a global population. These topics and more will be presented in this original exhibition.

  • Composer, Musician, Educator, and Pastor Dwight Andrews to Discuss ‘Living a Creative Life That Bears Witness to a World of Problems and Promise’

    ATLANTA (Jan. 28 2015) -- The 2015 Spelman College Distinguished Visiting Scholar Dwight Andrews, Ph.D., will discuss "Living a Creative Life That Bears Witness to a World of Problems and Promise" as part of the College’s 2014-2015 Signature Conversations in the Arts Series, Thursday, Jan, 29, 2015. Dr. Andrews will offer a meditation on his multi-dimensional career as a composer, musician, educator and pastor of First Congregational Church in Atlanta. The event is free and open to the public.

  • Spelman College Sisters Chapel, Churches and Community Organizations Join Forces to Host 'Arise, Awake and Act Against Sex Trafficking' Conference

    ATLANTA -- (Jan. 22, 2015) -- On Tuesday, Jan. 27, Spelman College Sisters Chapel, in collaboration with community partners the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Living Water for Girls, Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Interfaith Children’s Movement, will join forces to host “Arise, Awake and Act Against Sex Trafficking.” This daylong conference is designed to ignite a passion in the Atlanta community to help save young girls and boys who are victimized by human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.

  • Ford Awards Spelman College $75,000 as Winner of Second Annual HBCU Community Challenge

    ATLANTA (Dec. 17, 2014) – Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Company Fund announced Spelman College is the winner of the 2014 Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Community Challenge, awarding the school $75,000 in scholarships and grants for its innovative program that addresses the need for supplemental vegetation through the use of in-home gardening.

  • Spelman Student Wins Marshall Scholarship to Study in the United Kingdom

    ATLANTA (Dec. 1, 2014) – Tayler Ulmer, C’2015, has been awarded a Marshall Scholarship. Ulmer is the fifth Spelman College student to receive the scholarship since its inception in 1954. The scholarship finances young Americans of high ability to study for a graduate degree in the United Kingdom. Up to 40 Marshall Scholars are selected each year.

  • Spelman Students Earn Third Place in Hackathon Competition

    ATLANTA (Nov. 21, 2014) -- Spelman College computer science majors, Jazette Johnson, C’2015, and Micaela Hunter, C’2015, won third place and $10,000 in the United Athletes Foundation Hackathon Finals held Nov. 12-14 at the Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

  • Ring in the Holiday Season with the 88th Annual Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert

    ATLANTA (Nov. 17, 2014) – Spelman College and Morehouse College Glee Clubs will once again ring in the holidays together with a series of spirited musical performances filled with songs of the season, Friday, Dec. 5, through Sunday, Dec. 7. Each year, the Christmas Carol Concert is attended by thousands from across metro Atlanta who come to enjoy favorites such as “We Are Christmas” performed by Spelman Glee Club and “Betelemehu” performed by Morehouse Glee Club. The concerts are free and open to the public.

  • New Distinguished Visiting Scholar Aku Kadogo Explores Activism in the Arts

    ATLANTA (Nov. 13, 2014) -- Aku Kadogo, performer, theater director, choreographer and educator, has been named a Spelman College Distinguished Visiting Scholar for the 2014-2015 academic year. Kadogo welcomes Marc Bamuthi Joseph to campus Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. for the conversation, "Where People Gather: Hip Hop, Activism and Innovation." The event is free and open to the public.

  • Women Interactive Creative Technology Festival Returns to Spelman for Third Straight Year

    ATLANTA (October 27, 2014) -- For the third straight year, the Women Interactive Creative Technology Festival will return to Spelman College. Co-presented by the Digital Moving Image Salon and Art of Genius Creative Technology Series, this daylong event will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, at 9 a.m. Free and open to the public, the event will be held in the Cosby Academic Center.
