  • Kirstie and Kristie Bronner Named Co-Valedictorians for Spelman College Class of 2013

    ATLANTA (May 3, 2013) -- Identical twins Kirstie and Kristie Bronner, C’2013, have been named co-valedictorians for the Spelman College Class of 2013. With a 4.0 GPA, the Bronners are the first twins to receive the designation in the history of Spelman. Shay Johnson, C’2013, has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2013, earning a 3.94 GPA.

  • Spelman College Joins HBCU Fight to End Sexual Violence against Women

    ATLANTA (April 19, 2013) – According to the U.S. Department of Justice, young women between the ages of 16-24 still experience high rates of dating violence and stalking and approximately one in five will be sexually assaulted while in college. On Wednesday, April 24, 2013, Spelman College will be among 10 historically Black colleges and universities participating in Denim Day at HBCUs 2013 to end sexual violence against women.

  • Spelman College Digital Moving Image Salon Student Documentary Showcase April 25

    ATLANTA (April 22, 2013) – Three Spelman student documentaries, which delve into health and wellness, the Syrian Revolution and homelessness, will premiere at the Ninth Annual Spelman College Digital Moving Image Salon Student Documentary Film Showcase Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Midtown Cinema. Costume designer and stylist Shilla Benning will receive the Celebration of Excellence Award. The event is free and open to the public.

  • 'America's Doctor' Regina Benjamin, United States Surgeon General, to Deliver Commencement Address to the Spelman College Class of 2013

    ATLANTA (April 16, 2013) – Regina Benjamin, M.D., United States Surgeon General, will deliver the commencement address to more than 500 graduates of the Spelman College class of 2013 and receive an honorary degree on Sunday, May 19 at 3 p.m. at the Georgia International Convention Center. In addition to Dr. Benjamin, honorary degrees will be presented to Freeman Hrabowski, III, Ph.D., president of University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Harriet Mitchell Murphy, C’49, retired judge for the State of Texas. The Rev. Dr. Joseph Echols Lowery, civil rights advocate, will receive the National Community Service Award.

  • Spelman College Community Gets Moving With Inaugural 5K Run/Walk

    ATLANTA (April 2, 2013) -- On Saturday, April 6, Spelman President Beverly Daniel Tatum will lead off the college’s inaugural Wellness Revolution 5K Run/Walk. The run/walk supports President Tatum’s quest to have a direct impact on lowering the percentage of Black women who face serious health challenges, and forge a new health and wellness path for the Spelman community.

  • Renowned Vocalist Cassandra Wilson is Featured at Spelman College Festival of Women in Jazz

    ATLANTA (March 27, 2013) -- Grammy award-winning vocalist Cassandra Wilson is featured among the roster of musicians, singers, students and members of the academe who will come together at Spelman College to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of women in jazz at the 4th Kenyetta: A Festival of Women in Jazz, April 4-6. Kenyetta, free and open to the public, is one of the few jazz festivals to exclusively showcase women of the African Diaspora.

  • Toni Cade Bambara Conference Addresses Black Feminism and Its Role in Effecting Positive Social Change

    ATLANTA (March 19, 2013) -- The13th Annual Toni Cade Bambara Scholar-Activism Conference convenes March 22-23, 2013, at Spelman College to explore issues impacting women nationally and globally such as gender violence, misogyny in the music industry, mental health and its correlation to Black feminism, and sex trafficking. The conference, free and open to the public, will be hosted by the Spelman College Women’s Research and Resource Center in the Cosby Academic Center.

  • Spelman College and Pioneers in Black Speculative Fiction Honor Award-Winning Science Fiction Novelist Octavia E. Butler

    ATLANTA (March 13, 2013) -- Tananarive Due, 2012-2013 William and Camille Hanks Cosby Chair in the Humanities at Spelman College, is bringing together pioneers in Black speculative fiction to honor the legacy of science fiction novelist Octavia E. Butler, for her culminating event. Titled “Black to the Future: The Octavia E. Butler Celebration of the Fantastic Arts,” the half-day event takes place March 21, 2013 in the Cosby Academic Center starting at 12:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
