Science Channel Honors Alumna for Work in STEM

Spelman Alumna Valerie Camille JonesThe Science Channel recently honored math teacher Valerie Camille Jones, Ph.D., C’2000, for using science to make a difference in her community. She was one of three honorees recognized in May in the network’s monthly Science Super Heroes initiative, which aims to ignite passion for science and encourage the next generation of innovators, problem solvers and game changers.

The winners were highlighted on air and across Science Channel social platforms throughout the month. In addition, Dr. Jones was featured in a recent Atlanta Journal-Constitution article, which noted her Science Channel honor in recognition of her work in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and her participation in the 2017 World Science Festival this summer in New York City.

A teacher at Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Dr. Jones is highly regarded for her creative approach to helping her middle school students grasp the most difficult topics, using real-life applications to teach students that math is part of everything – from architecture to basketball. She is a 2015 recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation’s highest honor for teachers of mathematics and science.
