na'taki-osborne-jelksIn honor of Women’s History Month, the Atlanta City Council issued a proclamation to Na’Taki Osborne Jelks, Ph.D., C’95, in recognition of her decades of service to address environmental issues in west Atlanta’s underserved communities.

Atlanta City Council member Felicia A. Moore presented the proclamation to Dr. Jelks, an environmental and health sciences lecturer at Spelman, during the council’s March 6 meeting at City Hall.

Dr. Jelks is a nationally recognized leader in engaging urban communities and youth of color in environmental stewardship through hands-on watershed and land restoration initiatives, environmental education and training.

She formerly served in numerous science, education, and policy roles in the National Wildlife Federation’s Atlanta office and is founding member and chair of the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance, an organization committed to ensuring environmental justice in African-American communities on Atlanta’s westside.

In 2014, the Obama administration named her a White House Champion of Change for her outstanding work in engaging the next generation of conservation leaders.
