  • Student-Developed Mobile App Featured at White House Citizen Science Forum

    ATLANTA (Sept. 29, 2015) -- Elizabeth Sengoba, C'2017, will participate in the White House Citizen Science Forum Wednesday, Sept. 30. During the forum, Sengoba will give a two-minute lightening talk about the Innocase, a “health-on-the-go” mobile app developed by a team of Spelman students including Ropafadzo Denga, C’2017; Elizabeth Fohsta-Lynch, C’2017; Saleigh Derico, 2018; and Brianna Fugate, C’2018. Innocase is a real-time, interactive case that snaps onto any smart phone device and is activated by touch.

  • Education Department Awards Spelman College $2.7 million in First in the World Grant

    ATLANTA (Sept. 22, 2015) -- The U.S. Department of Education, in an effort to drive innovation and keep higher education within reach for all Americans, awarded Spelman College $2.7 million as part of its First in the World (FITW) grant program. Spelman was among 17 colleges and universities to receive nearly $60 million in funding.

  • Renowned Choreographer and Dancer Dianne McIntyre Named Spelman College Distinguished Visiting Scholar

    ATLANTA (Sept. 22, 2015) – Acclaimed performing artist Dianne McIntyre brings her aesthetic blend of history, culture and contemporary dance to Spelman College as the 2015-2016 Distinguished Visiting Scholar. During her yearlong residency at the College, McIntyre will create and collaborate in the classroom and the dance studio as well as on the stage.

  • Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Explores Science Fiction, Empire and the Citizen

    ATLANTA (Sept. 14, 2015) - Yale University Professor Hazel Carby, Ph.D., will participate in dialogue across Spelman College’s campus Sept. 17-18, 2015, as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program. During her two-day stay, she will join students of two Spelman English Department professors, Tarshia Stanley, Ph.D., and Pushpa Parkekh, Ph.D., for a classroom conversation about Octavia Butler's Bloodchild and post-colonial women's literature.

  • Leyte Winfield Receives 2015 Vulcan Award for Teaching Excellence

    Atlanta (August 25, 2015) -- Leyte Winfield, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the Spelman College Department of Chemistry, has received the 2015 Vulcan Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Winfield was honored at Opening Convocation Aug. 20 during the Presidential Awards of Excellence presentation. The Vulcan Award recognizes outstanding teaching, mentoring, leadership and service to the College by a faculty member.

  • Artist Howardena Pindell Returns to Atlanta Aug. 25 for Solo Exhibition

    ATLANTA (August 6, 2015) – In November 1971, Spelman College hosted the first public exhibition of the paintings and drawings of Howardena Pindell. Since then, Pindell has become a pioneering artist, writer, curator and teacher. Some 44 years later, the artist returns with Howardena Pindell, a solo exhibition of her intricately layered mixed-media paintings and works on paper, on view at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art from Aug. 25 to Dec. 5, 2015.
