Atlanta (March 18, 2014) -- Spelman College heats things up this Women’s History Month with “Catching Fire: An Evening of Epic Live Performance,” a celebration of women of color. Organized by the English Department and co-sponsored by the Women’s Research and Resource Center, the Honor’s Program, Office of Inclusion and corporate sponsor and diversity leader Randstad, the evening of artistic expression will shed light on issues affecting women of color through spoken word. The event is free and open to the public.

Hosted by Spelman poet Ain Ealey, C’2014 and Morehouse actor Will Addison, C’2017, the event will sizzle with spoken word presentations by national slam champion and vocal womanist activists Theresa Davis, 2011 Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion, 2012 Emerging Artist Award Recipient, and 2012 McEver Chair at Georgia Tech; and emerging Art Amock Slam poet Shyla Hardwick. These performance artists will not only bring fire, but unapologetic truth to the microphone.

The event will also feature other metro Atlanta performers, including the Spelman College Jazz Ensemble. Along with the featured performances, there will be an open mic session and a DJ. This event also serves as a way to give back to the community. In support of the “Bra Tribute” attendees are asked to bring gently worn and/or new bras to be donated to Atlanta area women’s shelters. Those contributing will be entered into a raffle to win Starbuck’s gift cards, courtesy of Randstad, ranging from $10-$50.
