ATLANTA (April 3, 2012)
On April 14, Spelman College students, faculty, and staff will unite with the West End Community to help combat childhood obesity during the K!DZ Walk around campus. Coordinated by the student organization Taking Action to Overcome Obesity (T.A.T.O.O.) and sponsored by Novo Nordisk, the walk will serve as a fun way to get families engaged in physical activity. Pre-registration is required and ends on April 11.
T.A.T.O.O., has been dedicated to revealing the repercussions of obesity in the West End Atlanta community, as well as at Spelman College since 2007. The organization is primarily focused on implementing programs, and providing services that enlighten Spelman students and the Atlanta community about obesity, while simultaneously influencing healthy eating behaviors.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sedentary behavior is an important component of obesity. The World Health Organization, notes that at least 60 minutes of physical activity, five days a week, can improve children's health. The K!DZ Walk will encourage people of all ages to take action 365 days a year to fight against obesity by participating in a 1.7 or 3.4 mile walk around Spelman's campus.
After the walk, attendees will have an opportunity to participate incooking demonstrations, exercise activities, such as zuumba and power yoga, and various sports games. The day will also consist of nutrition discussions, obstacle courses, and guided meditation, to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.

Obese children increase their chances of developing heart disease, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. As part of the College's Project Impact initiative, T.A.T.O.O., organized the K!DZ walk as a creative way to address these alarming statistics in the community right outside of Spelman's gates. The College has partnered with four elementary schools in the community which include Dunbar Elementary, Brown Elementary, KIPP STRIVE Academy and the Atlanta Preparatory Academy.
