The biggest draw about the Faculty WordPress sites, according to some trainees, is the variety of ways the faculty sites can be used:
-- Faculty interested in enhancing their profiles and curriculum vitae's can include multimedia, embed social media clips, add links to published works, actively blog about their scholarship and research activities, and collaborate and share ideas with colleagues at other institutions.
-- Professors can build their sites around a specific topics and campus organizations they support. They are also able to share their current research with scholars, students and media around the world.
-- Students can use the sites to obtain up-to-date research information from faculty, and enhance their critical thinking and collaboration skills by using the “comment features” of WordPress to engage their professors and peers in online discussions.
A Virtual Show and Tell
Veta Goler, Ph.D., arts and humanities division chair was one of the first professors to launch her faculty site.
“I am delighted that Spelman has offered faculty the opportunity to have a WordPress website,” said Goler, associate professor of dance. “This [effort] has provided me an important way for me to collect, in one place, information about various aspects of my work life — dance research, contemplative pedagogy, teaching, retreat facilitation and professional organizations.”
While Art and Art History Department chair Arturo Lindsay and professor Jessica Scott Felder use their sites to showcase their artistic work, global projects, interactive installments and scholarly work, Erica Lorraine Williams, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology timed the December 2013 launch of her faculty WordPress site with the debut of her award-winning book, Sex Tourism in Bahia: Ambiguous Entanglements with strategic precision.
That strategy proved prudent, and she was able to capture the attention of both individuals and media by making frequent posts and creating photo galleries of her extensive travels.
Yet another faculty member, Yonas Tekle, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, is using his new site to promote “The Tekle Lab,” which implements the basic principles of evolution to study the diversity, origin and relationships of medical and nonmedical microbes.
“I am also fascinated by interdisciplinary research approaches in answering challenging questions that affect our everyday life,” said Tekle. He invites students, academicians, and scientists with similar passions to share their work and thoughts on his new site.
“Working on my WordPress site was fun, especially with the help of the Spelman Web team,” said Goler. I also like that I can update my site any time I want. It is an important 21st century move from Spelman.
