Meet the Director of Administrative Services
Jackie James
Jackie James is a seasoned professional with more than 28 years of educational and corporate experience. Her career has covered a diverse area of responsibilities. She has served as Director of Procurement Services, Director of Procurement and Distribution, Director of copy services, telecommunications liaison and has had direct line involvement /responsibility with construction and facilities furniture design. Her background has also included responsibilities in leadership roles of accounts payable. She is a pass Board of Director member of the Georgia Minority Supplier Diversity Council.
In an effort to assure that Spelman College is recognized as a leader in process improvements in the educational arena her focus has been to improve operational processes. She and her team has advanced to a paperless purchase order process which has improved response time by faxing or emailing from the desktop to vendors, users and accounts payable resulting in the elimination of paper documents to the various customers. Most recently the department has launched the first one-line preferred vendor listing.

Her team has transformed the college’s phone system to a VOIP platform and has continued to reduce cost through national contract negotiations. The copier fleet that is currently on campus has been upgraded to assure network capability and scan to file is common practice said Jackie. The department under Jackie’s direction launched the first ever Banner Tutorial which gives the college community 24/7 accessibility to Banner training (procurement and financial system) and an on line vendor profile (including an on line Guest lecturer form) was introduced to the college which is a validation of who the college will do business with.
Establishing “Campus Ship Day”, improving vending for healthier choices (Just 4 U), improving laundry services which included a web based application that alerts students via text of the status of their laundry, and the annual college Passport Day on campus shows our community of staff, faculty and students that we are continuously thinking of ways to improve our processes said Jackie.
Jackie is a director on the move: The goal of her department is to deliver Excellence the first time and to provide Exemplary Customer Service at all times. She is co-chair of Excellence In Leadership Institute (ELI) Spelman’s first professional Leadership Training Institute, she was a major player in the launch of Standards of Excellence ( the college’s strategic initiative), she is a member of the Executive Leadership Council of Spelman College and has chaired and sat on many major committees of the college for process improvements and innovations.
Jackie’s career focus has always been on delivering Excellent Customer Service and building customer focused teams. She embodies the 3 C’s, Civility, Commitment, Consistency. Jackie has a degree in Speech Communications and credits her many years of experience as a procurement executive and auxiliary director in corporate America as the key to her career success.
