MARK THE DATE FOR ARTISTS MCCALLUM AND TARRY'S RETURN TO ATLANTA FOR EXHIBITION AT SPELMAN COLLEGE

ATLANTA (Aug. 6, 2010) “Evenly Yoked,” the latest video endeavor by Brooklyn-based artists Bradley McCallum and Jacqueline Tarry, will launch the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art’s 2010/2011 exhibition season Sept. 9 through Dec. 4. Intermittently presenting a contemporary couple on their wedding day, an aristocratic couple in the antebellum South, and a confederate soldier and a slave, in “Evenly Yoked” the artists examine race relations on an intimate scale over time. Featuring new works from the “Projection” series, a group of paintings that explore the intersection of race and the entertainment industry, the artists investigate stereotypes perpetuated in theater and cinema and provide a thematic context within which to experience “Evenly Yoked.”

“Evenly Yoked” will be showcased alongside “Bloodlines” (2007), “Cut” (2006), “Exchange” (2007), “Topsy Turvy” (2006), and “Whitewash” (2006 – 2009). McCallum and Tarry’s work garnered critical and popular attention when it was presented in recent years at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta Celebrates Photography, and the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art. The College is pleased to welcome them back to present this solo exhibition that exemplifies their engagement with self-portraiture, archival investigations, history, and race relations. This exhibition of recent works by McCallum and Tarry underscores the role of autobiography, performance, and masquerade in the artists’ careers.

“Evenly Yoked: Bradley McCallum & Jacqueline Tarry” honors the Museum’s unique mission to focus on art by and about women of the African Diaspora. Engaging complicated themes and including technically sophisticated art, this exhibition exemplifies the range of work that black women create and furthers the Museum’s ongoing commitment to presenting challenging contemporary art.

“Evenly Yoked: Bradley McCallum & Jacqueline Tarry” is organized by the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore and is a version of the recent exhibition “Bearing Witness: Bradley McCallum & Jacqueline Tarry” presented by the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore and the Maryland Institute College of Art.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Bradley McCallum and Jacqueline Tarry, a husband and wife collaborative, have produced an impressive body of work that possesses a potent combination of seductive, exquisitely crafted images and incisive content. Through their large-scale public projects, interactive sculpture, painting, photography, and video they leave a lasting impact in the communities they engage. They challenge audiences to reflect deeply on a variety of topics including teen homelessness, gun violence in inner cities, homicide, the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement and their own circumstance as an interracial couple.

McCallum and Tarry's work has been featured in exhibitions including “One on One,” SITE Santa Fe, Santa Fe, NM (2010), “Prospect 1,” New Orleans (2008); “Cinema Remixed & Reloaded: Black Women Artists and the Moving Image,” Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, Atlanta (2007); “Legacies: Contemporary Artists Reflect on Slavery,” The New-York Historical Society (2006); and “Witness: Perspectives on Police Violence,” Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, N.Y. (2000). They have also had solo exhibitions at Caren Golden Fine Art, New York; Kinkead Contemporary, Los Angeles; and Kiang Gallery, Atlanta. In addition, McCallum and Tarry have been commissioned to realize large-scale civic and public works. They were recently awarded a commission to create a Malcolm X memorial at the intersection of Central Park and Malcolm X Boulevard in New York City.
