OVERVIEW

This non-credit seminar course is intended to introduce First Year Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Dual Degree Chemical Engineering majors to the various subdisciplines, research areas, and career choices available to the student.  Experts from a wide variety of chemically related professions will be invited to campus to meet informally with students to discuss their educational backgrounds and the paths that they have taken toward attaining successful careers.  Research mentors within the department will introduce their research projects through a series of short presentations.  Students will also be provided with information in helping them to develop improved study skills, time management skills, and communication skills.

GOALS

The primary goal of the course is to have each First Year student to learn more about her chosen field of study, critically analyze her reasons for selecting the major, and effectively communicate her experiences, knowledge, and personal perspectives as they relate to her education and career aspirations.

As the First Year student learns more about her educational and career options, she will begin planning her own roadmap toward meeting her immediate and long term objectives.  Toward this aim, the student will be asked to complete a series of assignments where she will research her area of interest and reflect on her career goals.  She will be able to summarize her reasoning and present herself through a variety of effective written and visual formats, including a professional resume, reflective journal, personal statement, and video interview.  Selected pieces will be compiled and showcased using an electronic portfolio, or eFolio, which can be subsequently revised and updated throughout her college career.

Finally, and even more importantly, the First Year students will become acquainted with the faculty members and support staff within the department and College as well as others in the First Year peer group.  The bonding process is deemed essential to ensuring success as students seek out others with similar interests and begin building their support network for the future.
